Bovey Castle is a five-star country estate set within 275 acres of Dartmoor National Park. Combining grand accommodation, an on-site championship golf course, excellent dining and an extensive choice of leisure activities, it is particularly well suited to luxury golf breaks, couples and groups travelling with non-golfers.
Accommodation includes 60 individually styled bedrooms and suites within the historic manor, together with 22 self-catering country lodges. Each lodge has three en-suite bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and an open-plan living area, making them a practical option for golfing groups and longer stays.
The estate’s 18-hole course was designed by J. F. Abercromby in 1926 and opened for play in 1930. Measuring approximately 6,299 yards from the back tees, the par-70 layout provides two contrasting halves. The opening nine follows the River Bovey through the lower part of the estate, with woodland, streams and water hazards placing an emphasis on accuracy. The second nine climbs onto higher ground, where undulating fairways and elevated views introduce more of a parkland and moorland character. Golf facilities include an all-weather driving range, professional shop, tuition and equipment hire.
Away from the course, guests can visit the Elan Spa, indoor swimming pool and gym. Bovey Castle also offers an unusually varied programme of countryside activities, including falconry, archery, fly fishing, clay-pigeon shooting, deer park tours and off-road driving. These experiences make the estate a strong choice for mixed parties where not everyone intends to play golf.
The three-AA-Rosette Great Western Grill provides the hotel’s refined dining experience, while Smith’s Brasserie offers a more informal menu and views across the Dartmoor landscape. Afternoon tea and drinks on the terrace complete the classic country-house atmosphere.

About The Area
Totnes is a lovely base for a South Devon golf holiday, especially for golfers who want character, countryside, river views and easy access to some excellent nearby courses. It is not a typical golf resort town, and that is part of the appeal. Totnes has a relaxed, independent feel, with a historic high street, local food, interesting shops and the River Dart running through the town.
For golf, we would look at nearby Dainton Park Golf Club and The Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa. Dainton Park is a well-regarded parkland course on the outskirts of Newton Abbot, designed to follow the natural shape of the land. The Dartmouth Hotel, Golf & Spa is another strong option, with an 18-hole Championship Course and a shorter 9-hole Dartmouth Course, which makes it useful for mixed-ability groups or a more relaxed second round.
Away from golf, Totnes is full of easy extras. We would recommend a walk up to Totnes Castle for views over the town, River Dart and Dartmoor, then time around the riverside, cafés, markets and independent shops. You can also add paddleboarding, kayaking, River Dart trips, Dartington Estate or a day towards Dartmouth and the South Devon coast.
Our tip: choose Totnes if you want a golf break with proper local flavour, good nearby golf and a softer, more personal Devon holiday feel.
