Sunningdale Golf Club
Ascot
Located in Sunningdale, close to Ascot and Windsor, Sunningdale Golf Club is one of England’s most prestigious inland golf venues. The club is home to two world-class heathland courses — the Old Course and the New Course — both set among heather, pine, gorse and rolling sandy terrain.
The Old Course was designed by Willie Park Junior and opened in 1901. It is widely admired for its natural routing, strategic bunkering and classic heathland character, offering a thoughtful test where accuracy and imagination matter more than power. The course flows beautifully through the landscape, with mature trees, heather-lined fairways and subtle green complexes creating a proper old-school golfing experience.
The New Course, designed by Harry Colt and opened in 1923, provides a brilliant contrast while still feeling completely at home in the same setting. It is slightly more rugged in places, with firmer lines, strong bunkering and excellent heathland definition. Visitors playing from the yellow tees play the Old Course at 6,088 yards and the New Course at 6,080 yards, both as par-70 layouts.
For UK golf breaks, Sunningdale is a true bucket-list venue. It works especially well as part of a Surrey, Berkshire or London-area itinerary, pairing naturally with nearby courses such as Wentworth, Swinley Forest, St George’s Hill and The Berkshire. Visitor access is limited and needs planning well in advance, with the club currently welcoming visitors Monday to Thursday from May to October.

About The Area
Windsor is a very strong UK city-and-golf base, especially for travellers who want history, riverside scenery and easy airport access. The official Windsor visitor site says the town is just 12 miles from Heathrow, which makes it one of the easiest short-break destinations for inbound golf travellers.
The main visitor appeal is obvious: Windsor Castle, the River Thames, Windsor Great Park, Eton, boat trips, restaurants and royal heritage. The official Windsor tourism site lists Windsor Castle, Windsor Great Park, French Brothers boat trips, LEGOLAND Windsor and Ascot Racecourse among the area’s key attractions.
For golf, Datchet Golf Club is the nearest course to Windsor, running beside the River Thames with Windsor Castle overlooking the course. It is a 9-hole course with 15 tees, playing up to 6,087 yards. Royal Ascot Golf Club is another useful option nearby, set in the south-west corner of Windsor Great Park.
For Hashtag Golf Travel customers, Windsor works best as a premium UK short break, a Heathrow-friendly golf stop, or a culture-and-golf weekend with strong appeal for non-golfers too.
