Golf Club Adamstal Franz Wittmann

Ramsau am Dachstein

average rating is 4 out of 5

Golf Club Adamstal Franz Wittmann is one of Austria’s most memorable golf experiences, set in Ramsau in the Lower Austrian foothills of the Alps. This is not a flat, predictable resort course. It is mountain golf at its most scenic, with fairways carved through woodland, rock formations, streams and dramatic changes in elevation. The club began as a 9-hole course in 1995 before expanding to a full 18-hole course in 1998, with Canadian-Irish architect Jeff Howes helping bring Franz Wittmann’s vision to life.

Golfers can play the 18-hole Championship Course or the 9-hole Wallerbach Course, giving the venue plenty of variety for an Austria golf holiday. The Championship Course is sporty and strategic, but with up to five tees per hole, it remains enjoyable for different handicap levels. Expect tight fairways, elevated tees, peaceful forested holes and views that make you reach for the camera almost as often as the driver.

Adamstal has also welcomed professional tournament golf, including European Challenge Tour events and the Euram Bank Open, which adds to its reputation as a serious golfing venue.

For golfers staying in or around Vienna, Golf Club Adamstal is a brilliant day-trip or short-stay option. It suits players who want something different from a standard city golf break: quiet surroundings, clean Alpine air, dramatic holes and a course that feels properly tucked away from the world.

About The Area

Ramsau am Dachstein is a stunning Alpine base in Styria, set on a sunny high plateau at around 1,100 metres above sea level. For golfers, it is less of a pure resort-golf destination and more of a mountain holiday with excellent nearby golf — ideal for those who want fresh air, big scenery and plenty to do away from the course. The wider Schladming-Dachstein region highlights Ramsau for hiking, climbing, cross-country skiing and nature, with the village sitting between the Dachstein massif and the Schladminger Tauern.

The main golf option is Golf & Countryclub Schladming-Dachstein, near Schladming and Haus im Ennstal. Designed by Bernhard Langer, the 18-hole course sits at around 750 metres and is known for strong course quality, a sunny valley setting and water features that give it a distinctive character. The club describes the course as one of Austria’s most beautiful Leading Golf Courses, with Langer aiming to create a championship course that remains enjoyable for players of all handicap levels.

Golf here is best from late spring to early autumn, especially May to September, when the mountain weather is milder and the surrounding scenery is at its greenest. The nearby Dachstein glacier adds a proper wow-factor rest-day option, with panoramic views and attractions at around 2,700 metres above sea level.

Off the course, Ramsau is brilliant for active travellers. Hiking trails, cycling, mountain lifts, alpine pastures and scenic viewpoints make it easy to build a full holiday around the golf. Ramsau Beach and the Rittisberg area also add lighter leisure options, including a bathing lake, summer toboggan run, high ropes course and archery.

For golfers seeking Alpine scenery, a quality nearby course and a quieter Austrian mountain base, Ramsau am Dachstein delivers a refreshing and highly scenic golf escape.
